Linking Policy

Genealogy Links:

Currently the genealogy links are categorized into three divisions: general, Wisconsin, and United States specific. In an effort to not duplicate other genealogy gateway sites, the La Crosse Public Library Archives strives to make links to the major national, Wisconsin and U.S. sites that the staff and local clientele find useful in getting a start. The Archives does not attempt to link to every site because of the staff time spent updating dead links, but tries to select other gateway sites to guide users.

La Crosse Area Links:

Currently the La Crosse area links are categorized into seven divisions: General, Business & Industry, Churches & Religion, Government, Media & News, Organizations, and Schools. Different factors were used to decide what links are incorporated into each category. The La Crosse Area Communication Consortium hopes to implement and maintain a La Crosse area gateway site in the near future. In the meantime, the La Crosse Public Library Archives maintains a minimal list of links other than the local organizations, churches and schools.

Descriptions of Categories:

“General” is restricted to gateway sites and sites that include a lot of general information about La Crosse and the Coulee Region.

“Business & Industry” : Because there are so many La Crosse businesses and industries that have Web sites, it was decided to link to the local Chamber of Commerce site rather than listing individual sites because of the staff time spent finding, verifying and updating the links. Other business types of alliances are also listed here.

“Churches & Religion” : No other site we found in the area covered churches very extensively, so the Archives has endeavored to maintain a comprehensive list of churches in the county.

“Government” helps to get at some good quality content about La Crosse and its environs that are sometimes deeply embedded within governmental Web sites.

“Media & News” again is a comprehensive list of local media and news sites. Many of these have good quality content about the Coulee Region.

“Organizations” meaning non-profit social and culture groups are as comprehensive as possible, but rather than listing the links here, the Archives points users to the searchable organization directory online. Organizations that do not have Web sites are also listed in the organization directory.

“Schools” are links to the area school district Web sites.
