Children/teens from birth to 18 years-of-age are invited to participate in the first ever Beanstack Winter Reading Challenge from January 1-31, 2018. The La Crosse Public Library is partnering with Beanstack, a free online service to encourage children to read and explore new books, and with over 100 other libraries around the country to reach a nationwide goal of reading a total of 1 million minutes and 50,000 books in the month of January. If this goal is reached, Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban will donate $35,000 to the organization First Book, which distributes books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families in more than 30 countries. In addition to the nationwide reading goals, we're hoping to encourage children and families in the La Crosse community to read 5,000 minutes in the month of January, and for each individual participant to read a total of 600 minutes (10 hours).

It's easy to participate! Just visit the La Crosse Public Library Beanstack site at lacrosselibrary.beanstack.org, create a Beanstack account or log in to an existing account, register for the Winter Reading Challenge, and then keep track of the total number of books and minutes you spend reading during the month of January. When you register, you'll earn a Winter Reader 2018 button, which can be picked up at the Children's Room Desk in the Main Street Library or at the front desks of the North or South Community Libraries. Everyone who completes the Winter Reading Program by reading a total of 10 hours during January will earn a Winter Reading Champion Bookmark. Share your individual particpation and track the national progress on social media with the hashtag #WinterRead2018.
