American Memory Timeline

The American Memory Timeline take you through American history, starting with America as a new nation (1735-1815) and moving through the postwar United States (1945-1968).  It leads you to sets of selected primary sources located in the American Memory Collection online.

A Biography of America

A Biography of America is the companion web site to a video series and telecourse.  It includes a nice encyclopedia-like look at American history through articles, key events for the time period, maps, transcripts, and a webography, covering the first explorations of North America up through the 1990s.

A Hypertext on American History 

A Hypertext on American History is an online textbook that covers American history from the colonial period to modern times.

Objects from the Presidency

The National Museum of American History uses their collection of presidential artifacts to explore the lives and roles of the Presidents of the United States.

POTUS (from Internet Public Library)

"POTUS is the resource for finding background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and some points of interest on each of the presidents.  There are links to biographies, historical documents, audio and video files, and other presidential sites included."

SparkNotes:  American and European History

Sparknotes is written and provided by Harvard students and graduates.  The "History" section covers American history from the French and Indian War to the Vietnam War, and European history from the Roman Empire to World War II.  Generally, the guides provide a history summary, key dates and figures, a timeline and important events.  A great research tool!

Treasure Trove of North American Exploration

The Treasure Trove of North American Exploration contains accounts of North American voyages and explorations from the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by Christopher Columbus in 1492 to the famous trip through the Northwest Passage by Roald Amundsen in 1905.

Encyclopedia of U.S. History 1840-1960

This site provides encyclopedia-like accounts of historical events, enhanced by first-hand accounts derived from a variety of primary sources.

American History-General Primary Materials

Abraham Lincoln Papers

"The complete Abraham Lincoln Papers at the Library of Congress consists of approximately 20,000 documents. The collection is organized into three "General Correspondence" series which include incoming and outgoing correspondence and enclosures, drafts of speeches, and notes and printed material. Most of the 20,000 items are from the 1850s through Lincoln's presidential years, 1860-65. Treasures include Lincoln's draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, his March 4, 1865, draft of his second Inaugural Address, and his August 23, 1864, memorandum expressing his expectation of being defeated for re-election in the upcoming presidential contest."

American Originals

"American Originals presents a selection of some of the most significant and compelling documents from the National Archives holdings."   Here you will find the Resolution for Independence severing ties to Great Britain, George Washington's first inaugural address, information on the Louisiana Purchase, a casualty list of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the verdict in the U.S. v. Al Capone, Eleanor Roosevelt's resignation from the Daughters of the American Revolution, President Roosevelt declaration of war against Japan, the U.S. recognition of the State of Israel, and much more.

Chronology of US Historical Documents

The University of Oklahoma College of Law has compiled a nice listing of historical documents divided into time periods from the pre-colonial era up through the present.  Documents include the Federalist Papers, inaugural addresses, the Gettysburg Address, the Fugitive Slave Act, and the North Atlantic Treaty.

Digital History

"This is an extensive and well-organized site featuring "high-quality historical resources for teachers and students." It includes primary sources, interactive timelines, subject guides, etc.

Making of America

Making of America is a collection of digitized primary sources including books and journals from the antebellum period through reconstruction.   "The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology."
