Artcyclopedia has a "comprehensive index of every artist represented at hundreds of museum sites, image archives, and other online resources . . .  Artcyclopedia only provides references to sites on the World Wide Web where artists' works can be viewed online."  You can search artist by movement, by medium, by artist, or by subject.

Art on the Web

Jeffery Howe, of Boston College is the creator of this huge dictionary of artlinks on the Internet.  A sampling of its' offerings includes links to sites on women artists, ancient art, art galleries, art and computers, and much more.

Early American Paintings

"Early American Paintings in the Worcester Art Museum includes biographies of twenty artists, detailed entries on fifty-three paintings, and checklist information on twenty-four additional works.   Each of the seventy-seven works is illustrated.  This catalogue encompasses all of the paintings in the museum's collection that were created prior to 1830 by artists who were either born or active in America, including works painted abroad by those artists."

Exploring Themes in American Art

Exploring Themes in American Art provides illustrated essay linking to pictures, bibliographies, exhibition history, and provenance.   The site covers the following art themes: abstraction, the figure, historical subjects, landscape painting, marine painting, portraiture, narrative art, scenes from everyday life, still life, and topographical views.  It also lists over 100 artists and their biographies and an artist glossary.

Web Gallery of Art

Web Gallery of Art contains "over 8,00 digital reproductions of European paintings and sculptures created between the years 1150 and 1750" supplemented with commentary on their technique and history.  "A versatile search engine allows you to find pictures in the collection using various search criteria.  A number of guided tours make it easier to visit the Gallery and to understand the artistic and historical relationship between different artworks and artists included in the collection."
