Aboard the Underground Railroad

"Aboard the Underground Railroad: A National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary introduces travelers, researchers, historians, preservationists, and anyone interested in African American history to the fascinating people and places associated with the Underground Railroad. The itinerary currently provides descriptions and photographs on 50 historic places that are listed in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places, America's official list of places important in our history and worthy of preservation. It also includes a map of the most common directions of escape taken on the Underground Railroad and maps of individual states that mark the location of the historic properties."

American Civil War

The American Civil War is an Internet directory to a wide variety of web sites on topics related to the Civil War.  Here you will find links to information on colored troops, the Confederacy, railroads, money, maps, and many other topics.

American Civil War

The American Civil War encyclopedia contains a wealth of information about the Civil War.  You can learn about the war by exploring the site in a variety of ways:  through the civil war chronology, studying the civil war battles, reading about the key political figures and military figures, or examining the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

The American Civil War Collection contains a variety of primary resources.  It includes civil war letters, diary entries, and newspapers.

The American Civil War Homepage is a collection of online resources about the Civil War.  It includes graphs, letters, information about specific battles and campaigns, biographical information, and more.

Civil War Battle Summaries

The Civil War Battle Summaries is a quick guide to important battles of the Civil War.  It displays key information such as who won, outcomes, major players, battle location, and a short description of the battle.

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System

"The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. Currently, the largest part of the database is the lists of Union and Confederate troops.  Eventually the site will encompass lists of prisoners on both sides, cemetery rolls, and other information.

Been Here So Long: American Slave Narratives

In the 1930's, writers employed by the Works Progress Administration interviewed over 2000 ex-slaves.  This site contains seventeen of those interviews.

Civil War Maps

"The Civil War Map Collection of the Geography and Map Division [of the Library of Congress] consists of reconnaissance, sketch, coastal, and theater-of-war maps which depict troop activities and fortifications during the Civil War."  Search the map collection by keyword or browse by geographic location or subject.

Civil War Women

Civil War Women is a list of primary materials about the women who experienced the war.  It includes women's diaries, letters, documents, photographs and prints.
