Military Battles and Campaigns

U.S. Army Center of Military History Research Materials

The U.S. Army Center of Military History is nice repository of documents pertaining to the U.S. military from the Colonial Period up through Desert Storm (Gulf War).  It includes primary materials, maps, timelines, and articles from AMERICAN MILITARY HISTORY.

American Revolution

Spy Letters of the American Revolution

The Clements Library at the University of Michigan has digitized and preserved Sir Henry Clinton's collection of spy letters of the American Revolution.

War of 1812

The War of 1812

The War of 1812 web site is a companion to a four part documentary film that was directed by Brian McKenna.  Requires the Shockwave plug-in.

World War I

Encyclopedia of the First World War

The Encyclopedia of the First World War includes both in primary and secondary resources on World War I.  Sections include a chronology, allied armed forces, important battles, political and military leaders, the soldiers, war at sea, women at war, strategies & tactics, and much more.

The Great War:  80 Years On

The Great War:  80 Years On looks at the "war to end all wars" through personal accounts and historical analysis.  It includes recordings, images, and newsreels of the war, plus soldier's stories, and information on the major battles.

Trenches on the Web

Trenches on the Web answers the four major question:  what, when, where, who of the war.  It includes original articles, primary materials, and maps.  This is a vast directory to World War I information.

World War I Document Archive

"This archive of primary documents from World War I has been assembled by volunteers of the World War I Military History List.  The archive is international in focus and intends to present in one location primary documents concerning the Great War."

World War II

Documents of World War II

Documents of World War II is a directory of primary resources that contains maps, speeches, government documents, and personal accounts from the second World War.  It is international in focus.

Historic Government Publications from WWII

This site features over 200 government publications from World War II era. 

A More Perfect Union

"This site explores a period of U.S. history when racial prejudice and fear upset the delicate balance between the rights of a citizen versus the power of the state."   The site focuses on the experiences of Japanese Americans who were places in detention camps during World War II.

Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust

This site is an "overview of the people and events of the Holocaust through photographs, documents, art, music, movies, and literature."

WWII Resources

WWII Resources is a directory to primary source material on all aspects of  World War II, maintained by the Peral Harbor Working Group.

World at War, History of  WW 1939-1945

A directory of resourcs on WWII arranged in a timeline format, including maps, documents, and personal recollections.

Korean War

Korean War

"The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum features a collection of resources about the Korean War.  The collection contains week-by-week chronologies, photographs, teaching materials, background information, maps, and links to additional resources." (Netfirst Calendar Planner Issue 198)

The Korean War 50th Anniversary

The Department of Defense has complied this site to help commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War. It includes:  maps, biographies, chronology of the war, fact sheets, glossary, and a section called "tidbits."  A great starting place to explore the "forgotten war."

Vietnam War

Vietnam:  Yesterday and Today

Vietnam:  Yesterday and Today has been created primarily for students and teachers.  It includes the chronology of events and characteristics of the war, book lists for further exploration, "war literature" (drama, fiction, poetry, and short stories), and other web resources.

Gulf War

Fog of War

The Fog of War is presented by the WASHINGTON POST.   It includes a nice introduction and analysis of the war, the goals of the war, airstrikes, resources (actually a table of contents and a good place to start), and images from the war.

The Gulf War

A report on the Gulf War produced by the PBS program FRONTLINE.  In the section, "An Oral History" learn about the decision makers, the commanders, the Iraqis, and the analysts.  In "Voices in the Storm" listen to interviews compiled by the BBC Radio series.  It also includes maps, weapons and technology, and a chronology of the war.
