eNature

eNature contains field guides to over 4,800 North American plants and animals.  The guides include pictures, descriptions, both the common and scientific names, habitat, and other information depending on the species type.

NatureServe

NatureServe is a source for "authoritative conservation information on more than 50,000 plants, animals, and ecological communities in the United States and Canada.  NatureServe provides in-depth information on rare and endangered species, but also includes common plants and animals too." 

Phylogency of Life

Phylogency of Life is part of the Museum of Paleontology at the University of California-Berkeley.  The exhibits explore the ancestor/descendant relationship which connects all organisms past and present.

Animal Diversity

Animal Diversity is an "online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification and conservation biology."  The site includes text, pictures of living animals, photographs, movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds.

Amphibians

AmphibiaWeb

"AmphibiaWeb offers ready access to taxonomic information for every recognized species of amphibians in the world."  You will find species descriptions and life history information.

Checklist of Amphibian Species and Identification Guide

This site offers a browsable "checklist of all amphibian species and subspecies currently recognized in North America north of Mexico."

Reptiles

Embl Reptile Database

"This database is intended to provide information on the classification of all living reptiles by listing all species and their pertinent higher taxa.  It is supposed to be a source of taxonomic data, providing primarily (scientific) names, synonyms, distributions, and related data."

Birds

Introduction to the Aves

Introduction to the Aves explores the history of birds. The "Fossil Record" details the oldest known fossils and their  records throughout time. The "Life History and Ecology" section explores the impact of birds on ecology and life cycle. The "Systematics" section explores the various bird groups. And the "Morphology" section deals with the form and structure of birds.

Fish

Fish

Fish is an Australian Museum Fish site. This is a great place to find information on worldwide fishes. It also includes a pictorial key to help identify fish families, with links back to fish fact sheets. One interesting feature is under the "student stuff," where you can view dissections of fishes.

Fish Base

Fish Base offers a wealth of information for anyone interested in fish or fishing. "FishBase is an information system with key data on the biology of all fishes." It offers fish population dynamics, illustrated basic fishing concepts, access to Eschmeyer’s (1998) CATALOG OF FISHES database, lists of threatened fishes for any given country, and much more.

3D-Insects

3D-Insects offers a unique, clean, harmless viewing experience without the aid of a microscope. It includes the following species: ant, stag beetle, German cockroach, mosquito, grasshopper, water strider, flea, mantis, termite, yellow jacket wasp, fly, bee and the black willow spider.

BugBios

BugBios is a concise directory of bug information. It includes a brief description, picture, and family structure for the following: ants, bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, lacewings, antlions, cicada, hoppers, aphids, true bugs, cockroaches, mantids, grasshoppers, crickets, walking sticks, dragonflies,   damselflies, mayflies and more.

Bug Id

BugId is a helpful site that aims to identify unknown bugs. It offers a key to identify adult insects to a specific Order.

Insect Biology and Ecology: A Primer

Insect Biology and Ecology: A Primer gives readers who are unfamiliar with the biology and ecology of insects some useful background information. Here you can explore insect anatomy, insect reproduction, insect growth and development, insect classification and identification, and insect ecology.
