Abstract

The Coulee Clown Club was organized in 1980 with the purpose of supporting local non-profit social organizations, such as hospitals, nursing homes, community parades and special populations. By 1991, the purposes were changed to promote the art, education and enjoyment of clowning in the La Crosse area; to assist Club members to achieve their personal clowning goals; and to make a scholarship available to Club members. The group is affiliated with the World Clown Association as Alley #5.

Materials that are well represented in the collection include minutes from 1982-1999. These highlight the Club’s activities in the La Crosse area. Membership lists span from 1991-1999. Constitution and by-laws are represented though not all dated, and a folder on the Club’s involvement with the Wishland Pony Express from 1990-1991 also sheds light on the Club’s philanthropic efforts.

History

The Coulee Clown Club was organized in 1980 with the purpose of supporting local non-profit social organizations, such as hospitals, nursing homes, community parades and special populations. The first Clown Camp as held in the summer of 1980 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus. By 1991, the purposes were changed to promote the art, education and enjoyment of clowning in the La Crosse area; to assist Club members to achieve their personal clowning goals; and to make a scholarship available to Club members. The group is affiliated with the World Clown Association as Alley #5.

Scope and Content

Materials were copied from the originals provided to the Library by the Coulee Clown Club and then the originals were returned to the Club. As a result, not everything in the Club’s historical files were copied. An example of this are the correspondence files after 1991 because of their bulk and lesser historical value.

Materials that are well represented in the collection include minutes from 1982-1999. These highlight the Club’s activities in the La Crosse area. Membership lists span from 1991-1999. Constitution and by-laws are represented though not all dated, and a folder on the Club’s involvement with the Wishland Pony Express from 1990-1991 also sheds light on the Club’s philanthropic efforts. The Wishland Pony Express grants wishes to children with serious illnesses.

The collection is arranged alphabetically, therein chronologically. The materials have been photocopied from the originals, and the originals returned to the donor.
