CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. LOCAL HISTORY STUDIES. LA CROSSE CENTENNIAL INTERVIEWS, 1942. 0.4 cubic ft. (1 archives box)
Abstract
La Crosse, Wisconsin, was founded as a permanent white settlement in 1842 by fur trader Nathan Myrick. It was incorporated as a city in 1856.
This collection consists of studies of local individuals compiled by Central students as part of a La Crosse, Wisconsin, centennial project in 1942. Students interviewed subjects on aspects of their life and recollections of early La Crosse and the surrounding area. Most are general in subject, but some are more specific such as social welfare work, social life, education, winter sports, dress making, river travel, and the like. Transcribed interviews include general recollections, biographical interviews, and specific topical interviews. Discussion outlines are found in the collection as well, but there are no audio or moving image versions of these interviews.

History
La Crosse, Wisconsin, was founded as a permanent white settlement in 1842 by fur trader Nathan Myrick. It was incorporated as a city in 1856.
To celebrate the centennial of the founding, a committee had been formed and plans had been made for a large parade and other events around Independence Day. Because of the onset of World War II, it was decided to postpone the celebration. These interviews were one of the only things to actually happen. The centennial celebration was later held in conjunction with the Wisconsin state centennial of 1948.
