Join us for National Library Week this April 8-14, 2018 as we celebrate public libraries. National Library Week Giveaways and Contests

  • In honor of our 130th Anniversary, stop by any of our three La Crosse Public Library locations from April 8-14 to sign up for a new library card or to renew your existing library card to be entered into a drawing for a $130 gift certificate for Downtown Mainstreet, which can be used at over 75 downtown businesses.
  • From April 8-14, use #LaCrosseLibrary to share your love for the La Crosse Public Library on social media to be entered in a drawing for $50 gift certificates to the Greengrass Cafe. Post a library selfie, check in at one of our locations, share a book recommendation, and spread the library love! Limit one entry per person.
  • Join us for Patron Appreciation Day on Wednesday, April 11. The first 50 people to visit the North Community Library and the South Community Library will get a free goodie bag. The first 100 people to complete a scavenger hunt at the Main Street Library will get a free goodie bag. Limit one goodie bag per family.
  • Join us for Library Adventure Day on Saturday, April 14. Pick up your “library passport” and get it stamped at all three La Crosse Public Library locations to be entered into a drawing for $50 gift certificates to Houghton’s Jackson Street Pub. To help you complete your library adventure, we’ll be providing free trolley transportation between our three library locations on this day from 9 AM-3 PM. Limit one entry per person.
  • Attend special events throughout the week for special refreshments, door prizes and more.

Sunday, April 8: Local Talent Day

The public library is a great source of inspiration, a vital incubator of local talent, and an accessible performance venue and gallery space. Join us as we showcase the talents of local authors, musicians and artists. What’s your talent?  

  • 1:30-2:30 PM- Music on a Sunday Afternoon
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Auditorium
    Join us for our spring concert series, Music on a Sunday Afternoon. This week we'll be featuring a special free live performance by Prairie Smoke. A door prize drawing for all in attendance will follow the performance.
  • 1:00-3:00 PM- Book Signing of The 50-Year Summer
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Main Lobby
    Join Lynn Leuthe for a book signing of her new publication The 50-Year Summer, a nonfiction adventure story of living and working summers in Alaska. David Leuthe, the author of the book, passed away in 2015. His wife Lynn completed publication of his stories and is proud to present his work to the community.
     

Monday, April 9- “Libraries are for Everyone” Day

Everyone is welcome at the public library! Join us to celebrate the role of public libraries in promoting inclusion and forming connections throughout our wonderfully diverse community.   

  • 9:30-11 AM- Monday Morning at Main
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Auditorium
    Join us for a special Monday Morning at Main. John Schilling will be giving a presentation on “Kumbh Mela,” the mass Hindu pilgrimage, which has become the world’s largest human gathering. A special breakfast will be served in honor of National Library Week. Doors open at 9 AM. The Friends of the Library will be hosting their weekly Monday Book Sale, featuring great deals on used books, videos, records, and more.
  • 9:30-11 AM- Monday Morning Play Shoppe Party
    North Community Library, 1552 Kane Street
    Join us at the North Community Library as we celebrate the exciting new partnership between the La Crosse Public Library, The Parenting Place and The La Crosse Community Foundation. We’re throwing a party during our weekly Monday Morning Play Shoppe for caregivers and children ages 0-5. Enjoy free coffee, cupcakes, play, and a special storytime.
  • 11 AM-12 PM- “Libraries are for Everyone” Banner Unveiling and Reception
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Main Lobby and Front Plaza
    You’re invited to the grand unveiling of our new “Libraries are for Everyone” front entrance banner display. A reception featuring refreshments and live music from the Greg Balfany Jazz Quartet will be held in our main atrium starting at 11 AM. At 11:30 AM, we’ll be revealing our new “Libraries are for Everyone” banner display with a ceremony featuring the Ho-Chunk Nation’s Little Thunder Singers. We will also be announcing the start of a new annual art contest, which will invite local artists to design new library banners to join the front entrance display. This new banner display and art contest is made possible thanks to generous donations from community members and groups. 
  • 4:00-5:00 PM- Are You Smarter than a Librarian?
    South Community Library, 1307 16th Street South
    Children ages 8+ are invited to join us at the South Community Library to compete against three of our most brilliant librarians in this fun and fast-paced trivia contest. Test your knowledge against the original search engine--librarians.
  • 6:00-8:00 PM- Monday Night at the Movies
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Auditorium
    Join our weekly Monday night film series for a screening of the new film adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (2017, PG-13, 114 minutes). Free popcorn and special refreshments.
  • 6:30 and 7:30 PM- Dark La Crosse Walking Tours
    Walking Tours Will Depart from a Downtown Location, Registration is Required
    Dare to join the La Crosse Public Library Archives and Local History Department for a stroll through La Crosse’s macabre past. Your expert narrator will guide you down a dark path featuring true stories about the former “red light district,” Prohibition-era crimes, small town politics, and vigilante justice. Walking tours will depart at 6:30 and 7:30 from a downtown location and will last approximately 45 minutes. Reservations are required. To reserve your spot please register online at footstepsoflacrosse.org. This program is recommended for those over 16 years of age.
     

Tuesday, April 10- Downtown Day

We’re proud to be a part of Downtown La Crosse. Join us to celebrate our local downtown economy and culture.

  • 10:00- 11:00 AM- Tech Class: Library Streaming and Downloading Services
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Computer Lab
    Join us for a special technology class focused on the amazing free digital streaming and downloading services currently offered to City of La Crosse residents with a library card. Find out about all the movies, music, books, and audiobooks you can access for free right on your computer, tablet or smart phone, anytime of day or night! Bring your charged smart phone or tablet if you’d like to download the apps and set up an account during class. Seating is limited. Please call the Reference Desk at (608) 789-7122 to reserve your seat.
  • 6:30-8:00 PM- Storytime for Adults: April Fools
    Turtle Stack Brewery, 125 2nd Street South
    Why should children have all the fun? Storytime for Adults meets at the Turtle Stack Brewery monthly. In April, our theme is “April Fools.” Listen to some of your favorite local librarians read humorous stories of foolish fun and devilish pranks. Some stories may include adult content. Listener discretion is advised. Ages 21+. Free appetizers. Beverages will be available for purchase.

 Wednesday, April 11- Patron Appreciation Day

Thank you for visiting and supporting the La Crosse Public Library. Stop in during our regular open hours for a free gift (limit one per family)! We’ll be giving away free goodie bags to the first 50 people who visit both the North and the South Community Libraries and to the first 200 people to complete a short and accessible scavenger hunt at the Main Street Library. The Parenting Place will also be the library to give away free children’s books: Main Street Library from 9 AM-1 PM and 5-7 PM; North Community Library from 9 AM-3 PM; and South Community Library from 9 AM-3 PM.

Thursday, April 12- Food for the Mind, Food for the Body Day

Feed your mind while helping to feed the community. We’ll be donating $.25 to the Hunger Task Force of La Crosse for every item checked out today at any of our three locations (up to $500 total). Donations of non-perishable food items will also be accepted at the front desk of all three locations. Our sincere thanks to the Hunger Task Force for their 20 years of service to eliminate hunger and harvest community resources throughout La Crosse. We look forward to continuing our partnership for many decades to come.

  • 10 AM-Noon- Technology Class: Computers for Beginners
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Computer Lab
    Never touched a computer before? Come learn the very basics about computers and how to use them, including the mouse and keyboard. Seating is limited. Please call the Reference Desk at (608) 789-7122 to reserve your seat.
  • 1:00-3:00 PM- Adult Crafts: Pebble Artwork
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Auditorium
    Join us in crafting original works of art created with rocks.  All supplies are provided.  If you prefer your own scissors or tools, please bring with you.  Registration for this event is now full.
  • 1:00-3:00 PM- Hunger Task Force Food Distribution
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street
    The Hunger Task Force will be joining us from 1-3 PM to distribute free food to the community while supplies last. Stop by to pick up some free, fresh food or to just show your support for the Hunger Task Force.  

Friday, April 13-Friday Fun Day

It’s an early release day in the School District of La Crosse, so join us at the La Crosse Public Library for an afternoon of fun activities for children and teens. The public library is always a great place to hang out after school. 

  • RESCHEDULED: Touch-a-Truck
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, 9th Street Parking Lot
    Due to the increasing likelihood of poor weather, our outdoor Touch-a-Truck event has been rescheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, April 17.
    Have you ever wanted to see fire truck up close? Join our Children’s Librarians for our second annual Touch-a-Truck! Children of all ages and their caregivers can see, touch, and interact with a variety of big trucks and heavy equipment from a wide-variety of city departments and local businesses.
  • 3:30-5:30 PM- Teen Fandom Trivia
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Lower Level Auditorium
    Do you consider yourself a super fan? Students in grades 6-12 are invited to test their skills at this awesome event! We'll be asking questions about six different fandoms (Doctor Who, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Supernatural, and Hamilton) so bring all your fandom friends and see if your team knows the most!
     

Saturday, April 14-Library Adventure Day

Choose your own library adventure! Visit all three of our locations to sample everything the La Crosse Public Library has to offer. Free trolley rides will be available from 9 AM-3 PM, providing transportation between the Main Street Library, the North Community Library, and the South Community Library. We’ll have events, activities and free food available throughout the day. Get your “Library Passport” stamped at the front desk of all three locations for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Houghton’s Jackson Street Pub. The North Community and South Community Libraries will both be open expanded hours today from 9 AM-3 PM.

  • CANCELLED: 10:30-11:30 AM- Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble

    Update: Due to the poor road conditions, the Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble will not be able to make the trip down from Madison. We're very sorry to have to cancel their appearance today. We plan on rescheduling their visit very soon. Stay tuned for details!
  • 10:30-11:30 AM- La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra
    South Community Library, 1307 16th Street South
    Members of the La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra will be performing chamber music favorites at the South Community Library.
  • 11:00 AM-2:00 PM- Board Game Fun with River City Hobbies
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Fireplace Area
    Check out the La Crosse Public Library's new collection of board games along with our good friends from River City Hobbies.  From The Settlers of Catan to Bananagrams, we've got games for all ages and skill levels. Learn about some new games, then check out and take home a game to play at home.
  • 11:00 AM-3:00 PM- Cloudy’s Gourmet Brats Food Truck
    Main Street Library, 800 Main Street, Front Plaza
    The Cloudy’s Gourmet Brats Food Truck will be parked outside the Main Street Library from 11 AM-3 PM.  We’ll be giving away free brats to the first 100 customers. Check out the Cloudy’s Facebook page or website for full menu and weekly specials.

    Inga just called to let us know that she's stuck in the snow and the local authorities have told her to stay off the roads. Despite her best attempts at getting here, we're unfortunately going to have to cancel her appearance today. We'll be working with Inga to reschedule her live cooking demonstration as soon as possible. Stay tuned for details!
