If you like stories about animals, and cats in particular, you’ll like the book “Making Rounds with Oscar”. Oscar has lived at the Steere House Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center since he was just a kitten. Oscar interacts with the people who live and work there when, and if, he wants to. Oscar lives in the Alzheimer’s wing of the home so many of the patients do not even have the ability to interact with him. Since he isn’t particularily friendly to any one person, the staff notices that when he cuddles up on a patient’s bed that the person is “not long for this world”. In other words, Oscar can predict when a resident is going to die. Enter Dr. David Dosa (the author) who starts to pay attention when some of the staff insists that Oscar has an unusual ability. He is very skeptical at first but after interviewing numerous staff, patients, and family members, he has to agree something unexplainable is happening. The book documents Dr. Dosa’s “research” into Oscar’s behavior and also provides a heartbreaking glimpse into how Alzheimer’s affects the patients and their families.
