    Favorites from 2017
by Noreen, Electronic Resources & Periodicals Librarian

    • Fiction
      • The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden: a thrilling fantasty novel (first in a series) with a Russian setting
      • The Old Man by Thomas Perry: a 60-year-old retiree finds himself back on the run when someone associated with a 35-year-old army intelligence operation gone wrong discovers he's still alive
      • After the Crown by K.B. Wagers: Gunrunner-turned-empress Hail Bristol has to defend her throne from challenges on-planet and off in this sequel to 2016's Behind the Crown. Wagers is a masterful action writer who also creates characters with enough vulnerability to draw you in.
    • Cookbooks
      • My Master Recipes by Patricia Wells: Wells provides a master recipe to illustrate a particular technique (braising, simmering, grilling, etc) and lists a number of variations to give a coko more confidence in the kitchen
      • Simple Green Suppers by Susie Middleton: By pairing fresh in-season produce with staple ingredients (eggs, noodles, grains, beans, greens, etc), Susie Middleton makes vegetarian suppers easy to pull off. With some made-ahead ingredients, most of the recipes come together in under 30 minutes.
    • Audiobooks from Overdrive
      • The Irish Country Series  by Patrick Taylor (An Irish Country Doctor, An Irish Country Village and An Irish Country Girl): These are not new, but they were new to me in 2017. The Irish accents make these audiobooks a joy to listen to. My favorite of the three titles is An Irish Country Girl, which is the best ghost story I've ever heard.
