West Ave & State Street, 1970 State Street and West Avenue North looking east, 1970

In 1970, traffic signals, along with dedicated left-turn lanes, and through/right-turn lanes controlled the intersection. Mr. D’s Donut Shop was located on the southwest corner (the right side of the photograph).

The cross section of State Street and West Avenue North remains quite similar to that shown in 1970, with dedicated left-turn lanes, and through and right-turn lanes. Mr. D’s Restaurant and Bakery has since moved to the south part of its original lot, with the actual building set back south approximately thirty yards from State Street. The building, a landmark in the city, was expanded and seats approximately 40 people.

The original Mr. D’s restaurant was featured in this 1970 photograph. West Avenue North had on-street parking on both the east and west sides of the street. The southeast corner of the intersection was occupied by the IBM Corporation whose sales and service office was located here.

This photograph shows West Avenue North in 2003. On-street parking has been removed and replaced with a second driving lane on each side of both streets. No left turns are allowed onto State Street from West Avenue North. The photograph also shows the new building for Mr. D’s Restaurant and Bakery, completed in 1978.
