This morning the American Library Association announced the Youth Media Award winners, which includes several prestigious awards, from the Newbery to the Caldecott to the Coretta Scott King awards. Think of it as the Oscars for books. In terms of teen books, the coveted Michael L. Printz award is given each year to “…the book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.” This year’s winner is Going Bovine by Libba Bray. Going Bovine tells the story of Cameron Smith, a disaffected sixteen year-old who, after being diagnosed with Creutzfeldt- Jakob's (aka mad cow) disease, sets off on a road trip with a death-obsessed video gaming dwarf he meets in the hospital in an attempt to find a cure.
