Nonfiction = Fun?

2010-01-29 12:32:48 Posted By: Linda - YS

Okay, so some of you out there might have already known that reading nonfiction can be lots of fun, but I’m guessing that there’s a fair number of you that might have had a different impression of nonfiction, such as it's boring, dull, dry and must only be read if required by a teacher. Well, let me tell you that that is no longer the case—the world of nonfiction has expanded to include lots of what I like to call “recreational” nonfiction, meaning that while it is still nonfiction, it is nonfiction that you WANT to read instead of nonfiction that you HAVE to read. In other words, this ain’t your mother’s nonfiction. So now I bet you’re wondering where you can get your hands on such books and the answer is in the teen area at the Main Library! Just this week a teen nonfiction collection debuted in the teen area and it is chock full of fun, interesting and unique titles that have absolutely nothing to do with homework or school but have everything to do with wildly enlightening information. Here are just a few titles to whet your appetite:

How to Survive a Horror Movie: All the Skills to Dodge the Kills by Seth Grahame-Smith
Full of illustrated instructions on avoiding ghosts, serial killers, haunted cars, murderous pets, telekinetic prom queens, and countless other hazards, How to Survive a Horror Movie is essential reading for movie buffs of all ages!

Would You Rather…? Gross-Out: over 300 Crazy Questions plus Extra Pages to Make up Your Own! By Justin Heimberg & David Gomberg
Features gross-out dilemmas and wacky illustrations that include all the classic categories: boogers, farts, vomit, and more. Even the most stalwart teen won't be able to resisting wincing and wondering through their laughter as they ponder such questions as "Would you rather . . . bathe in a tub of saliva or eat a salad sprinkled with boogers?" or "Would you rather . . . sweat maple syrup or cry melted cheese?"

The Band Name Book by Noel Hudson
Explains how (or where) the best-named bands in history got their names. Those names are profound, clever, silly, provocative or downright obscure. This entertaining book is full of information and trivia about bands from the dawn of rock 'n' roll right up to today's Internet-based independents.

I Can’t Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous & Obscure Edited by Rachel Fershleiser & Larry Smith
From cancer to creativity, prom dates to promiscuity, and breaking hearts to breaking laws, the memoirs in this collection reveal that often the youngest writers have the most fascinating stories to tell.

Appetite for Detention by Sloane Tanen
From back-to-school anxiety and chick cliques to gym class, teachers, and other eye-rolling icons of school life, these photographic scenes of the teen experience are as ingenious as they are hilarious.
