The La Crosse Public Library will officially break ground on a transformative renovation project during a public ceremony on Monday, August 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Main Street location (800 Main Street, La Crosse, Wisconsin). The event marks the beginning of construction funded by a $3 million Flexible Facilities Grant awarded in October 2024 by the State of Wisconsin. 

This exciting project—Phase One of a larger, multi-phase plan—will modernize existing library spaces to better serve the evolving needs of the La Crosse community. Key elements of the renovation include new classrooms, small meeting rooms, computer labs, a telehealth room, a refreshed social seating area, and an updated creation and makerspace. The project will also upgrade broadband infrastructure and patron technology to ensure fast, secure, and reliable internet access for all users. 

“We are thrilled to begin this next chapter in our library’s history,” said Library Director Dawn Wacek. “This renovation will help us create more welcoming, functional, and inclusive spaces for learning, connection, and creativity.” 

As a kickoff, construction and library leadership will swing a ceremonial sledgehammer into soon-to-be demolished drywall, making way for construction crews to begin work. The public is warmly invited to witness this milestone and celebrate the start of the library’s next evolution. 

Construction Timeline: 

  • March–May 2025: Movement of collections and furnishings 

  • June 2025: Soft start to construction 

  • August 18, 2025: Official groundbreaking ceremony 

  • January 2026: Anticipated completion of Phase One 

In addition to this work, planning for Phase Two—focused on the Children’s Room, sensory and comfort spaces, and new teen and tween areas—is already underway. A capital campaign will launch in the coming months to support this next phase.
